According to the plan, SAIC Volkswagen's MEB plant will be officially put into operation this year, and it is currently the largest pure electric vehicle plant in China. SAIC Volkswagen’s MEB plant has a total investment of approximately 17 billion yuan, a total land area of 410,000 square meters, a total construction area of 620,000 square meters, and a planned annual production capacity of 300,000 vehicles. The factory completed the signing of the land transfer contract on October 10, 2018, and obtained the construction permit and started construction on October 12, setting a new record for the approval speed of social investment projects in Jiading District. In May 2019, the main structure of each building of the new factory was capped, and the equipment began to install and debug. Pre-production trial production will begin in October 2019. In November 2019, the MEB plant achieved the first full-process prototype to roll off the production line.The first product is a pure electric medium-sized SUV on the MEB platform. It is also the first ID. family model that SAIC Volkswagen will put into production in the future. It will be officially unveiled in November this year.
The MEB factory adopts the world's most advanced digital production technology of Volkswagen Group, and many technologies are used in the factory for the first time.




The body shop is divided into two floors. The first floor is mainly the door cover, the bottom plate 1 and the assembly line. The second floor is mainly the side wall, the bottom plate 2, the total assembly and the reporting line. The design and production capacity of the body shop is 60JPH, that is, 60 body-in-white can be completed per hour, with an annual output of 300,000. The workshop adopts a large number of advanced intelligent manufacturing technologies, has 946 robots, and has an automation rate of 84%. It is currently the body workshop with the highest automation rate of SAIC Volkswagen.
The 120JPH paint workshop is the world's first high-capacity paint workshop of Volkswagen Group, which can supply both the MEB plant and Anting Auto Plant 3 at the same time. Compared with the two traditional 60JPH standardized paint workshops, the building area is saved by 12%. The production capacity of the workshop is 120 vehicles per hour, which is twice that of the standardized workshop. After reaching full capacity, it can produce 600,000 vehicles per year.
The battery workshop is SAIC Volkswagen's first all-aluminum battery shell self-made and battery packaging and distribution workshop, with a planned annual production capacity of 300,000 units. The workshop has two floors. The second floor is the battery housing line. The finished shell is automatically transported to the battery assembly line on the first floor by elevator. After the battery pack is assembled, it will be automatically transported to the battery pack ordering center on the second floor by elevator. After each battery pack is matched with the car shell, it will be automatically transported to the assembly workshop through the corridor.

In the battery workshop, SAIC Volkswagen made its own aluminum casing for the first time. Since the thermal expansion coefficient of aluminum alloy is twice that of steel, the welding process is more prone to welding deformation, so higher welding accuracy is required. The battery pack produced in the workshop has passed 203 rigorous tests. At the same time, in order to cope with the more stringent battery standards in China, SAIC Volkswagen independently designed a complete heat control system. In the event of an extreme situation, it can control open flames within 5 minutes. Emerging from the shell to protect the safety of drivers and passengers. According to Volkswagen's official disclosure, the new battery pack life will be longer than 8 years (120,000 kilometers) of life (the battery charge and discharge cycle test reaches 1,600 times, each cycle is equivalent to the entire vehicle driving 350 kilometers to 550 kilometers).

The design production capacity of the assembly workshop is 60JPH, and the annual production capacity will be 300,000 after reaching the capacity. It is currently the assembly shop for mass-produced models with the highest automation rate of the Volkswagen Group, with an automation rate of 26.2%, and a higher degree of modularity and flexibility. The second floor platform of the workshop has a complete conveyor line. The car body is transported from the paint shop to the final assembly shop through the corridor; the battery pack reaches the second floor platform of the final assembly shop through the conveyor chain, and goes down to the chassis pre-assembly line through the elevator.

Vehicles driving off the production line will be tested in the road test area. There are 9 types of test roads in the road test area: sine wave road, protruding manhole road, sinking manhole cover, Belgian road, rough stone road, swing road, blue basalt road, nail head road, asphalt road. The total length is 712 meters.

In the future, the new plant will also put into production a new generation of pure electric vehicles from various brands of the Volkswagen Group. Based on the MEB platform, SAIC Volkswagen will build a "family" of pure electric vehicles suitable for Chinese consumers to meet the needs of different consumers.
